On vinyl, ’78 Live From Austin TX captures Merle Haggard at his absolute peakthe Bakersfield architect performing for Austin City Limits just two years after “I Think I’ll Just Stay Here and Drink” and with “The Way I Am” still climbing charts. This New West Records archival release preserves “Okie from Muskogee,” “Mama Tried,” “Workin’ Man Blues,” and the Strangers’ legendary musicianship in the intimate PBS studio that launched ACL’s reputation.

By 1978, Haggard had established himself as country music’s greatest living songwritera ex-convict who’d turned personal pain into universal truth. His ACL performance captures the power that made him essential: the voice that could break on “Sing Me Back Home” or snap with defiance on “The Fightin’ Side of Me,” backed by the Strangers’ impeccable Telecaster twang and pedal steel. Austin’s crowd, already legendary for their silent attention, witnesses country music’s poet laureate at the height of his powers.
