Released the same year he married Amanda Shires, *Southeastern* marked Isbell’s emergence from a difficult period of sobriety and personal reinvention, and that lived-in reckoning is inseparable from what makes the songwriting hit so hard. A decade on, tracks like “Cover Me Up” and “Elephant” haven’t aged so much as deepened, the way the best songs do when life catches up to them.

Jason Isbell’s songs are filled with ghosts. They’re haunted by spirits both welcome and unwelcome, by the personal and historical legacies that make us who we are. Nowhere Is this more evident than on his 2013 breakthrough album Southeastern. Isbell offersconfessions. reflections. and promises that contront andmake communion with those who have come before and remain wIth us still. Its twelve tracks represent an extended meditation on the concept articulated by anothercelebrated southern storyteller, author William Faulkner: “The past is never dead. It isn’t even past.”
